The days are getting longer, the sun is getting warmer and nature is showing its best side: spring has begun on Gavdos. But this is gradually changing. When do the accommodations and tavernas on Gavdos reopen and what is it like to travel to Gavdos in spring? Find out in this article!

🌿 What’s Inside:
#1: Weather and Atmosphere on Gavdos in spring
Spring on Gavdos is one of the most beautiful and underrated times to visit the island. The new season slowly begins around the Orthodox Easter holidays, when the first tavernas reopen, accommodation welcomes guests again and life gradually returns after the quiet winter months. At the same time, nature on Gavdos shows its most colorful side. The hills turn green again, wildflowers bloom across the landscape and birdsong fills the air. Mild temperatures and longer sunny days make spring an ideal season for nature lovers and those who want to experience the island in a peaceful atmosphere.
The weather in spring is already very pleasant, although it can still be a little changeable at times. In March, temperatures usually range between about 16 and 20°C during the day, while nights can still be quite cool. Occasional rain showers are possible, but sunny days are already becoming more frequent. The sea is still rather fresh at this time of year, but on warm and calm days it can already be tempting for a quick swim.
In April, the weather stabilizes further. Daytime temperatures often reach 18 to 22°C, and many days are sunny with only occasional clouds. Hiking conditions are excellent during this time, as the temperatures are comfortable and the island is full of blooming plants and fresh greenery. During Orthodox Easter, the island suddenly becomes noticeably busier, as many locals, families, and friends return to the island. For a few days, the island feels almost as lively as it does in summer. Many accommodations and taverns open shortly before to cater to and accommodate the many guests. After Easter, the island becomes very empty again and calm returns until the gradual start of the summer season in June.

By May, weather on Gavdos already starts to feel much closer to early summer. Temperatures often reach 22 to 25°C, the sea becomes noticeably warmer and long sunny days are the norm. It is still far quieter than in the high season, which makes this period perfect for exploring the island at a relaxed pace.
Spring is therefore one of the best seasons for hiking, long walks along the coast and discovering the island’s landscapes. The temperatures are pleasant, the nature is at its most beautiful and the beaches are often almost empty. Even swimming becomes more and more enjoyable as the water slowly warms up.
For those who enjoy camping, spring can also be a wonderful time on Gavdos. Many beautiful camping spots can be found across the island, and the peaceful atmosphere makes spending time outdoors especially enjoyable. In addition, you can stay in your tent longer in the morning and won't be roasted by the sun in your tent shortly after sunrise, as you would be in summer. The entire camping experience is much more pleasant in spring than in midsummer. However, it is important to remember that nights can still be cool and humidity often rises significantly after sunset, particularly near the sea. A warm sleeping bag and some protection from wind and moisture are therefore recommended.

#2: Start of the season on Gavdos: What opens now?!
As is typical for Gavdos, the start of the season is very slow. Things are still much quieter than on the neighboring Cretan island, which is already noticeably full of tourists at the end of April. The first tavernas, such as Livykon in Agios Ioannis or the Four Brothers in Sarakiniko, welcomes their guests again from Orthodox Easter. Kiki's Cafe with its mini market and rooms in Sarakiniko opens already 20-25th March. The Princess Hotel in Kastri, which operates all year round, remains a reliable address for spring travelers. As a rule, the Metochi near Korfos also opens at the end of April/beginning of May. Panorama rooms will start from frist of May and the restaurant is going to open beginning of June. Other tavernas, mini-markets and accommodation will then follow in the second half of May or early June at the latest. Also, in spring, you can usually enjoy a cold drink and snacks at the lighthouse at sunset on weekends. #3: Ferry and Bus connection on Gavdos in spring
The ferries already run very regularly from Chora Sfakion and Paleochora to Gavdos in spring. Anyone planning a trip can rely on a stable connection. But as always on Gavdos: Wind can cause the ferry to stop! You can find all the information on ferry times, prices and booking in my ferry article.
There are currently no buses on the island. They will start around late May. This means that if you don't have your own vehicle, you need to be flexible or hitchhike. The local car rental companies on the island are also not yet open. Even if not all businesses are open yet, the most important things for a relaxed stay are already available: Eating, drinking, sleeping - and plenty of rest.

#4: Travel tips: What to do on spring in Gavdos
You were already on Gavdos in the summer and simply couldn't tear yourself away from your hammock? The air was too hot and the temptation to relax completely under the blazing southern Greek sun was too great. Of course, the hammock is also ideal in spring, but now is the time to actively explore the island. Flowers everywhere, green meadows as far as the eye can see. Birds chirping and the fresh scent of plants. The island's nature is alive and waiting to be discovered by you. At no other time is the island as colorful as in spring. The “longer hikes” on Gavdos in particular offer maximum reward. Pyrgos, Lavrakas, Potamos, and Tripiti should be on your list. In my travel guide, you will find detailed directions, interesting information, tips, and secrets about the routes. On warmer days, you can also plan a relaxing day or two at the beach. The water still feels cool, but you won't regret it. Depending on the time of your trip, you should definitely visit the taverns that are already open. The taverns are much quieter, and the atmosphere is correspondingly relaxed. The new season is starting, and everything seems fresh and revitalized. You can also see this in the locals, and somehow this fresh and revitalized wind of new beginnings blows across the whole island. Gavdos in spring is something you should experience at least once.
